I've struggled with delegating...
It’s been almost two weeks since my last newsletter. I've written one for the past three years and though I'm essentially sending it into the Internet abyss, it still feels like we've been having an ongoing conversation. I miss you!
I'm currently writing a book - coming out Spring 2020 - all about how women can gain power at work while bringing other women with them. The hardest has been relinquishing my day-to-day role at Ladies Get Paid. You know that saying, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself? That's practically been my mantra.
It works for a while but it's utterly unsustainable, especially if you’re running a business. Writing this book has forced me to learn the art of delegation and the meaning of trust. Without either, you’re guaranteed to stay small.
Ashley and I have big dreams for Ladies Get Paid (we have some exciting updates coming soon), so we’ve had to adapt quickly.
Here are some things we've learned about letting go:
Find the root of your anxieties about delegating - most likely it's perfectionism - and deal with it. Therapy helps.
Establish expectations and goals.
Define success and the benchmarks you need to see to achieve it.
Create a review + feedback process and focus on what someone did well and how to improve, versus what they did wrong.
Be clear on the division of labor.
Express appreciation and celebrate small wins.
How have you been able to delegate? We'd love to hear from you so tweet us at @ladiesgetpaid.
Now go get paid.
