Farnoosh Torabi is a celebrated financial expert, host of the award-winning podcast So Money, and bestselling author of multiple books, including her latest: When She Makes More.  She is also a speaker at our upcoming conference, Get Money Get Paid, happening in Brooklyn on November 2nd. We sat down with Farnoosh where shared her best money advice and what attendees can look forward to hearing from her at the conference.

What is the best money advice you’ve ever received?

“You don’t get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate.” I can’t recall where exactly I heard this advice first, but it’s something I’ve held onto for many years as a reminder that I need to be my first and greatest advocate in order to earn what I’m truly worth. You’re not entitled to anything just by virtue of who you are and what you do. Instead, you need to prove with fact, figures and your negotiating prowess that you are worth every penny.  

What’s a moment in your career that you’re really proud of?

Starting my podcast, So Money, in 2015 was a pivotal moment for me in my career and has paid off in spades every since. I’m proud of the fact that I pursued it with little guidance and just pure determination. I focused strictly on quality and consistency and overtime – with many tweaks – the show has grown to receive over 10 million downloads and have an incredibly captive audience. 

Who is a woman you admire (living or dead)?

It’s impossible to choose just one, but I admire my two and a half-year-old daughter. She’s not a woman – yet – but she is one of the most confident, determined and fearless individuals on the planet. We can be inspired so much by children, their innocence and complete unobstructed points of view…My daughter provides me not only with inspiration but a true sense of purpose and drive. 

What is one thing you hope the conference attendees will take away from your story?

I’d love to offer up new ways of thinking about how to measure your worth. And the ways you are bringing value to your employer or your clients that you may have overlooked or dismissed.
