Fereshteh Forough is the Founder & CEO, Code to Inspire, the first coding school for girls in Afghanistan with the mission of educating Afghan women with in-demand programming skills, empower them to add unique value to their communities and inspire them to strive for financial and social independence. We are so excited to learn more from Fereshteh at Get Money Get Paid 2019 in Brooklyn on November 2nd. We asked her a few questions about the proudest moment in her career, and what attendees can look forward to learning from her at the conference.

What is the best money advice you’ve ever received?

Great things can start can empty hands! As a refugee born I learned this when you necessarily don’t have all the opportunities around you to overcome the obstacles.

What’s a moment in your career that you’re really proud of?

When a high school girl from our coding school who never touched a computer, never been online and never had a basic phone, learned how to make a website and got paid $200 for her first web design work!

Who is a woman you admire (living or dead)?

My mother! My main inspiration is my mother. She learned how to make dresses which she sold to buy us school supplies. She taught me how to be an entrepreneur and make the best out of the least.

What is one thing you hope the attendees at the conference will take away from your story?

“Building Afghanistan 2.0.” I want to defy preconceived notions of refugees and Afghanistan and build a better understanding of what it means to be a refugee and an Afghan woman, or even better: both.
